ROGER ARMITAGE, ARTIST

ABOUT ROGER

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My Art education began at an early age, attending my first life class around age 18.  Since then I have had various art mentors and continued my love affair with art throughout my working life.

I founded and ran my own art brokerage and advisory business representing many well know and successful Melbourne artists for several year in the 90’s but the last 30 years of my professional life has been spent as a financial adviser, first as a sole trader and later as a senior adviser at a prestigious Melbourne firm.

Since retiring from my career as a financial adviser in 2022, I returned to formal study in fine art at RMIT completing a Diploma in Visual Art 2025 and partly completing an Advanced Diploma also in 2025.  My intention is to continue formal study in fine art focussing on printmaking in its various forms.

I have a passion for life drawing which I have pursued from an early age. Like any love affair, it has its joys and its frustrations.  The beauty, complexity and transience of the human form still fascinates me and permeates my work to this day.

Starting from what I see, whether it’s the human form, animal or an aspect of the natural environment, my work is an exploration of the transient nature of reality.  To capture a fleeting moment in time and to invite a deeper contemplation of the impermanent nature of things and how those moments are filled with beauty and meaning by virtue of their fleeting nature.

Always changing like shifting light on water or moving shadows in a landscape, everything has its own arc, its own rhythm.  Things arise, persist for a moment and then decay eventually returning to their own empty nature.  Our perception is similarly fleeting with things perceived for just a minute then gone, never to re-appear in the exact same way.

This inevitable cycle is at the heart of my artistic practice.

Since returning to formal study in fine art at RMIT I have fallen in love with the discipline of printmaking in its different forms and how that medium can illuminate my love of nature, the human form and their transient nature.
